Het nieuws kwam op een koude donderdagochtend. Stilletjes, maar als een mokerslag. Don Leo is overleden in zijn slaap, na een kortstondig ziekbed. Hij werd 79 jaar. Zijn familie maakte het nieuws bekend via een kort, emotioneel bericht:

“Met diepe droefheid delen wij mede dat onze geliefde Leo van der Velden vannacht is overleden. Een groot man is niet meer. We vragen om privacy in deze moeilijke tijd.”

Sociale media explodeerden. Clubs plaatsten zwart-witfoto’s, supporters verzamelden zich bij stadions om bloemen te leggen, en oud-teamgenoten waren zichtbaar aangeslagen. “Dit is de ergste nachtmerrie ooit,” schreef een supporter van Feyenoord op X. “Hij was ons kompas, onze held, onze Don.”

Een erfenis die nooit zal sterven

Don Leo laat een erfenis achter die verder reikt dan het voetbal. Hij was een vaderfiguur, een mentor, een vechter tegen onrecht, en bovenal: een mens. Zijn betrokkenheid bij maatschappelijke projecten, zijn pleidooien voor kansengelijkheid in de sport, en zijn nooit aflatende inzet voor jongeren hebben ontelbare levens beïnvloed.

Hij geloofde dat voetbal meer was dan een spel. Het was een kans, een reddingslijn, een middel om jongeren te inspireren om hun dromen te volgen — net zoals hij dat ooit deed op die pleintjes in Rotterdam.

Herdenkingen en eerbetonen

De KNVB heeft inmiddels aangekondigd dat er een nationale minuut stilte zal worden gehouden bij alle wedstrijden in het komende weekend. Daarnaast wordt er een speciale herdenking georganiseerd in De Kuip, het stadion waar Don Leo zijn grootste triomfen vierde. Duizenden fans worden verwacht.

Ook internationaal stromen de steunbetuigingen binnen. Real Madrid, waar hij kortstondig als technisch adviseur werkte, postte: “Una leyenda se ha ido. Descansa en paz, Don Leo.” (Een legende is heengegaan. Rust in vrede, Don Leo.)

Woorden schieten tekort. Hoe vat je het leven samen van een man die zóveel betekende voor zóveel mensen? Misschien is het mooiste eerbetoon wel te vinden in de tranen van de kinderen op het Cruyff Court, waar hij nog vorig jaar een clinic gaf. In de stilte op de tribunes. In de verhalen die generaties zullen blijven doorvertellen.

Don Leo is niet meer. Maar zijn geest, zijn lessen, zijn vuur — die leven voort.

Rust zacht, Don Leo. En bedankt. Voor alles.
