🎥 ‘The Ballad of Judas Priest’: Uncensored Documentary to Chronicle 50 Years of Metal Legacy
A new documentary titled The Ballad of Judas Priest is currently in production, aiming to chronicle the legendary heavy metal band’s over 50-year career. Co-directed by filmmaker Sam Dunn and marking the documentary debut of Tom Morello (guitarist of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave), the film promises an intimate, uncensored look at the band’s journey—from their 1969 formation through cultural milestones, including surviving controversies like the 1980s “subliminal messages” trial and frontman Rob Halford’s groundbreaking decision to come out as gay in the late 1990s.
The documentary will explore Judas Priest’s significant influence on the sound and image of heavy metal, as well as their efforts to make the genre more inclusive. Though the release date is not yet confirmed, anticipation is high among fans. The band remains active, with original members Rob Halford, Ian Hill, and Glenn Tipton still performing. They released their 19th album, Invincible Shield, in 2024 and will embark on a North American tour with Alice Cooper this autumn.
In a statement, the band said: “We have lived and breathed metal for over five decades, and finally in this documentary we are summoning our congregation to officially witness our lives uncensored, in a … !”
The film is being produced by Sony Music Vision, with Banger Films—known for Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey—also at the helm of production. Tom Morello is taking on an executive production role, supported by industry veterans like Rick Krim and Sheila Stepanek.
While awaiting the documentary’s debut, fans can look forward to Judas Priest’s upcoming North American tour alongside Alice Cooper. The tour, which kicks off in September, is set to feature a slew of dates across major cities in the United States and Canada.
The Ballad of Judas Priest promises to be a definitive chronicle of the band’s enduring legacy, offering fans and newcomers alike an unfiltered look at the pioneers who helped shape the heavy metal genre.
