A news item that’s been trending this way all spring: Jordan Smith wants to be a Georgia Bulldogs.
The Houston County (Ga.) safety has been one of Georgia’s primary defensive back targets all cycle long. That reached its final stage on Sunday when Smith announced his plans to play college football in Athens. Smith — in a surprise announcement for his mother on Mother’s Day — committed to Georgia over Florida State, Tennessee and Georgia Tech, Dawgs247 has learned.
Smith has been trending toward the Bulldogs all calendar year.
“Growing up, that’s all you hear about, Georgia football, Georgia football, Georgia football,” Smith told Dawgs247 earlier this spring. “But, it definitely, definitely there’s a connection there. Growing up, I always wanted to be that.”
The 4-star prospect from Houston County (Ga.) has had Georgia at the top all spring long, thanks to his relationship with Bulldogs’ coaches. Georgia cornerbacks coach Donte Williams and co-defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson have tag teamed this recruitment. Smith projects as a safety or Star for the Bulldogs, but both secondary coaches have been heavily involved in this recruitment.
Smith has established all year that his bond with the Georgia staff has separated the Bulldogs on his board.
“Man, the coaches really, I can say that for the most part, I’ve been to campus multiple, a couple of times, and you naturally get that feel. But the coaches, man, they keep in contact with me, you know what I’m saying? I like that. Donte calls me every day, man. Man, we talk about the games, we talking about the recruiting events, we talking about the whole college experience,” Smith said. “He keep it straight forward. He don’t, he don’t just try to sell me. Like, he want me to, you know, be comfortable in life and make sure my values add up with what I’m looking for, you know what I’m saying?”
Smith has visited Georgia at every turn over the last year.
The Houston County visited Athens for multiple games in the fall and was one of the first defensive backs invited for junior day at the beginning of the year. Smith attended Georgia’s first practice of the spring season back on March 11, which was a leading indicator of where Smith was leaning.
“Shoot, man. The experience, man. Everybody’s always, it’s always loud, and it ain’t never quiet in Athens. I like that,” Smith said. “I just like the environment, you know what I’m saying?”
With Smith’s pledge, Georgia moves to nine commitments in the 2026 recruiting class. Smith joins a defensive back group that includes Kealan Jones and Zech Fort already at safety.
Smith’s decision gives Georgia a composite team score of 182.09. That puts the Bulldogs back in the top 10 at No. 10 in 247Sports’ recruiting team rankings.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back ranks as the nation’s No. 6 safety and the No. 56 overall prospect in the country.
