Sports Greg McElroy Names Top 3 Head Coach in College Football

The Texas Longhorns last won a national championship in 2005 after the USC Trojans after a last-second touchdown run by quarterback Vince Young. The Longhorns have been trying to return to competing for national titles and have come close under head coach Steve Sarkisian.

In a recent “Always College Football” episode, Greg McElroy explained why he put Sarkisian as the third-best head coach in college football. Since taking over in 2021, Sarkisian has made one bowl game appearance and has twice been to the College Football Playoff.

Last season, Texas made it to the semifinal before losing to eventual national champion Ohio State Buckeyes.

At number three, Steve Sarkisian at Texas,” McElroy said. “He’s 38-17 in his four years. Overall, in his 11 years as a head coach dating back to his time at Washington and USC, he’s 84-52. Those 38 wins that he’s had in the first four seasons, that ties Mack Brown for the wins ever at Texas in the first four years of his tenure. He’s lost some disappointing bowl games, but if you look at the program he inherited, it wasn’t in bad shape. It was a program that had been floundering, a program that did some good things but never ever really reached their ceiling

In the last two seasons with Texas, Sarkisian has a record of 25-5. In Texas’ first season in the SEC, he led the Longhorns to an 11-1 regular season record and a spot in the SEC Championship Game. For the first time since 2022, Sarkisian will have a different quarterback starting under center. Quinn Ewers declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, leaving Arch Manning as the expected starter for the Longhorns next season. Texas kicks off the 2025 season against the Ohio State Buckeye
