Boston Bruins rookie defenseman Michael Callahan has been fined $2,018.23 by the NHL for cross-checking Anaheim Ducks forward Jansen Harkins during a game on Wednesday. This amount represents the maximum allowable fine under the collective bargaining agreement, with the funds directed to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 13:58 of the second period, leading to Callahan receiving a double-minor penalty for high-sticking. Later, at 4:12 of the third period, both Callahan and Harkins were penalized for fighting. This marks Callahan’s first penalty minutes of the season.
Callahan, a 25-year-old native of Franklin, Massachusetts, has appeared in 14 games this season, averaging 13 minutes and 32 seconds of ice time per game. While he has yet to record a point, he holds a minus-4 rating, with 11 blocked shots and five hits.
This fine adds to a series of disciplinary actions involving Bruins players in recent seasons. For instance, in February 2024, defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was fined $5,000 for spearing Washington Capitals forward Max Pacioretty. Similarly, in March 2024, forward Charlie Coyle received a $5,000 fine for cross-checking Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bertuzzi. These incidents underscore the NHL’s commitment to enforcing player safety and maintaining the integrity of the game.
