So sad: I might not return Jordan Dawson declares urgent break due to current status and might not play against……

The appointment of Jordan Dawson as captain of the Adelaide Football Club was somewhat of a surprise when it was announced on the weekend.

The 25-year-old former Sydney Swan was sworn is as Crows skipper after just one year at the club and with only 86 games of AFL experience to his name.

Dawson, who has taken the reins from Rory Sloane, shed some light on his appointment and how it came about.

“With ‘Sloaney’ going down (last year) there was that opportunity for myself,” Dawson said on SEN’s Sportsday.

“Coming in I had those chats with ‘Nicksy’ (Matthew Nicks) and he was watching from afar when I was at Sydney with my on-field leadership. He could see that coming through.

“I’ve always played my best footy when I’m trying to lead the group as well on-field. From that aspect it wasn’t as much of a surprise.

“I think I’ve created good relationships, I think the club can see my passion for the club and for the boys. Probably what I didn’t really gather was the respect (that comes) with the players voting me in.

“You’re never really sure of where you sit and that was a real honour to hear from other players where they saw me as a leader.”
