Jurgen Klopp’s Wembley finals: From Dortmund heartbreak to…

Borussia Dortmund arrived in north west London for a showdown with their Bundesliga rivals having dumped out Manchester City and Real Madrid along the way.

But the Bavarians, who romped to yet another league title by finishing 16 points ahead of second-placed Dortmund, edged a tense tussle.

The deadlock was broken on the hour mark by Mario Mandzukic before Ilkay Gundogan, who would go on to join City, levelled from the penalty spot.

But Bayern had the last laugh as Arjen Robben scored an 89th-minute winner

Whether the Community Shield really counts will forever be up for debate but Liverpool lost another shootout against the league champions in the 2019-20 curtain raiser.

Raheem Sterling scored in the 12th minute to put City in front but Joel Matip equalised in the 77th minute and parity remained until penalties.

Liverpool’s showing was better this time but City were spot on as they won 5-4 – the only player to miss being WijnaGeorginio ldum.

Klopp said it would be “completely mad” to predict how the season would unfold – and Liverpool went on to win their first Premier League, albeit with the Covid interruption disrupting their flow.
