Rangers captain James Tavernier will sign a new contract with the club soon, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Scottish Premiership club wants to extend his deal by two years. His current contract expires in 2024, but this new deal will run until 2026. The 2021 PFA Scotland Player of the Year will continue his storied journey with Rangers.

The English right-back has been at the club since 2015, and if he fulfils the length of his new contract, he could go past a decade with the Gers.

During his time at Ibrox, James Tavernier has established himself as a club legend after his early struggles at Wigan Athletic. He has made 343 appearances for Rangers, scoring 83 goals and assisting 107 more. He has won four trophies in Scotland.

Tavernier captained Rangers last season on their fantastic run to the final of the Europa League. His remarkable performance against Borussia Dortmund in the two legs of their round of 32 tie will remain with the club faithful for life.

He scored in every home knockout game in the run and finished as the 2021/22 Europa League top scorer. Last season, he contributed 18 goals and 17 assists. His returns are incredible for a defender.

Despite his impressive performances at Rangers, Tavernier has still not received a call-up from England manager Gareth Southgate. But to be fair to the waistcoat-wearing tactician, they have too many options at right-back. Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker are ahead of him.

Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha, Steven Gerrard and Gio van Bronckhorst have all trusted James Tavernier, and he has delivered.

‘Tav’ has not been linked with a move away from Rangers, but the fans will be happy to see one of their heroes tied down on a long-term deal.

The club has lost Calvin Bassey to Ajax and Joe Aribo to Southampton. They will not want to lose another important fixture in their team.
